Please to help with wretched auto?

Dear sirs, my old five zero five is causing me much much troubles again. Local mechanic who is willing to repair has estimated it will cost over $4,000 U.S. to put in order. He patched my engine last week so that I might be able to go to and from work but warned me it would soon break again. As I was driving home after working two shifts tonight the head lamps suddenly went dark and would not come back on. I was so weary from work and many miles away so could not walk. Not knowing what to do I walked to a local Wal-Mart across the street and purchased two very bright flash lamps and used duct tape to attach them to my hood. I am curious to know if police will ticket me for driving in this manner. What could be wrong with my head lamps? I cannot afford to keep paying to repair this horrid auto. Please some suggestions to repair myself?
